Tuesday–ready to GO!

So all my eats are planned, calculated and ready to go!

Breakfast: 1C nonfat yogurt with 3/4C raspberries. I also plan on having a large coffee with milk in the morning.

Lunch: Salad with mixed greens, baby carrots, red bell pepper and kidney beans. Dressed in 1/8C balsamic and 1 tsp olive oil.

Morning/Afternoon Snacks: an apple and baby carrots

Dinner: 5 oz cooked salmon and baby spinach, red bell pepper, shallots and sliced almonds. Dressed in 1/8C balsamic and 1 tsp olive oil.

My plan is to hit the gym straight after work for at least 30 minutes of cardio. I’ll be having a clementine as a post workout snack.

Christmas Lists and such…

Evening everyone!

I had an interesting day trying to get some things done here at home while trying to get my sleep schedule back to normal. The worst thing about working nights is getting used to working nights. Getting back into a regular (aka non nocturnal) sleep schedule after working a couple of night shifts can be very difficult.Β  I end up feeling tired all day and all night!

I subsequently ended up waking up very late today. Much too late for breakfast!! I had a variety of steamed veggies from yesterday’s leftovers and decided to make a warm winter vegetable salad:

I used:

  • mixed greens
  • steamed broccoli, cauliflower, baby carrot, snow peas and zucchini
  • diced red bell pepper
  • spanish onion
  • dressed in balsamic vinegar, 1 tsp olive oil, kosher salt and ground black pepper

I ate this with one melba toast and enjoyed 1.5 mugs of coffee afterwards with 1% milk.

While I was initially planning to prepare some salmon for dinner, J and I were both in the mood for some sushi so we ordered from Koganei Sushi, my absolute favourite Japanese restaurant!

Spicy Salmon Rolls

Mmmmmmmmmmmm…..I had about 8 edamame pods and ended up having 10 spicy salmon rolls. It was delicious!

So both my hubby and sister in law have asked for my Christmas wish list–we generally do Kris Kringle amongst my husband’s family and my SIL has me this year. Although writing wish lists was really weird to me at first, I realized it just made things easier for everyone involved since we all ended up getting something we liked and didn’t have to sit around guessing. Also, hubby usually needs some direction in terms of buying for me. So I came up with a bunch of things that I thought would be good options for either of them in a variety of price ranges: (We generally spend ~ $150 for our Kris Kringle)

My Wish List:

  • A heart rate monitor–I figure I could really put this to use in starting up my running again! I’m thinking something simple that tracks calories, HR and pace. Something easy to use. Anyone have any suggestions as to which model??
  • Uggs style boots–perhaps people think they’re passe, but they just look so comfy and would be good for wearing to and from work/gym
  • Subscription to Martha Stewart Living or some other mag with great recipes
  • Gift certificate to: Aveda spa/Sephora/Spa Finder
  • Comfy pj’s
  • Yoga/exercise mat
  • Healthy cookbook
  • Cute tote for work
  • Great lip balm that has a “finger free” application
  • Peppermint flavoured coffee

So just a lot of random things that I’d end up buying for myself anyways…

Yup, winter has begun….

Snow….slush…ice….mud…..winter storms…….

Winter Storm

It took about an hour to get home this morning, despite it normally being a 20 minute drive. What is it about the first snow storm that causes people to forget how to drive???

Anyhow, by the time I got home I was very hungry so I made a super quick, super satisfying breakfast:

Eggs and melba toast

Lunch was my 2 old faithfuls: salad and a green monster:

Salad and GM

For my salad I used:

  • mixed greens
  • campari tomatoes
  • baby carrots
  • 1/2 avocado
  • spanish onion
  • 1/3 C kidney beans
  • 1 tsp olive oil, balsamic vinegar, kosher salt & ground pepper

And my GM:

  • 3 leaves of kale
  • 1.25 C 1% milk
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1 TB plain nonfat yogurt
  • 1 TB flaxseeds

And while I’ll be having dinner at work, here’s what my hubby prepared for me:

Catfish and mushrooms

Cajun catfish and button mushrooms in cajun spices and sriracha sauce. I’m only going to bring 1/2 of the fish with me and I’ll bring along some baby carrots and clementines.

My dinner last night: I had packed some almonds and fruit for dinner last night at work but this definitely was NOT enough for me and I ended up snacking on some candied nuts we had at work and had 2 Glo Bars I had stashed in my work locker.

I have come to recognize that ingesting large amounts of sugar will leave me with unsteady blood sugar levels for about a day or two and I’ll have all sorts of cravings. When this happens, I usually up the protein, good fats and water and it slowly takes care of itself.

How do you deal with cravings and unsteady blood sugar levels?

Apart from the cravings, which are subsiding, I am feeling well. I’m definitely looking forward to hitting the gym tomorrow. Tonight is my final night shift (and they’ve been pretty brutal–virtually no sleep breaks) and I’ll have a few days off after that. πŸ™‚

Onward and Upward….

Hey all!

So my day started at 2pm when I awoke after my night shift. I had a horrific headache that pounded with every step I took. My surefire cure:

water and GM

I also had a great big mug of English Breakfast tea with a bit of 1% milk. The GM had kale, banana, 1% milk, plain nonfat yogurt and flaxseeds. My headache was gone within about 45 minutes. πŸ™‚

For lunch, I invited a new friend over for some salad:

Balsamic Vinegar

I thought I’d try something different. I’ve tried a LOT of different balsamics and I had always seen this one at my grocer’s so I thought I’d give it a go!

Lunch:

Salad

My salad:

  • mixed greens
  • campari tomatoes
  • baby carrots
  • 1/2 avocado
  • spanish onion
  • dressed in balsamic vinegar, olive oil, kosher salt and ground pepper

The balsamic was tasty but very subtle in flavour. I had to use more than I would usually use and it still somewhat lacked both the sweetness and acidity that I would normally expect from a premium balsamic.Β  It wasn’t terrible, just not the best I’ve had.

Along with my salad I had some Allegro skim milk cheese and a high protein pita:

Busy like a Bee

Today started off buzzing like a bee….I awoke to my Blackberry buzzing away due to my friend’s efforts to wake me for coffee! Teehee….

Caramel Latte

Mmmmmm….hellooooo! I had a grande NF caramel latte. This was so good it was gone in about 8 minutes πŸ™‚

After my coffee I hit the gym and in a word….

GLORIOUS!!!

It was one of my best workouts yet. I alternated running at 4.8-5.2 mph and walking at 3.8 mph for about 45 minutes. I pretty much did 2-3 minutes of running with 3-4 minutes of walking. I have to say, when I started to run, I felt good. I felt strong and was really able to pushΒ  myself. I finally remembered why I used to run–because I love it!

I had other errands to run after the gym so while driving I had 2 clementines:

By the time I got home I was hungry and very quickly assembled this salad:

  • mixed greens
  • 1/2 avocado
  • red pepper
  • campari tomatoes
  • cremini mushrooms
  • spanish onion
  • baby carrots
  • 1 roasted skinless chicken breast

Despite having picked up some groceries, I forgot one crucial thing…something so important that my heart skipped a couple of beats and I stopped breathing for a moment when I realized…..

I forgot to buy more balsamic vinegar!!!

OMG what a catastrophe!!! How was I going to dress this salad?? I was almost near tears. If you haven’t noticed, I really like my salads and I really enjoy good balsamic vinegar. It is such a huge component of my salads!!! Anyhow, I scoured my pantry and found some rice wine vinegar and used that along with 1/2 tsp olive oil.Β  It was totally disappointing but will have to do until I can get more.

I was really looking forward to this evening as J and I were going to Walker’s Fish Market for my mother in law’s birthday dinner:

Everything on the menu sounded super fresh! I started out with mussels in white wine as my appetizer. I had about 1/2 of the portion:

Along with the mussels I also tried my first oyster! (not pictured) It was actually very tasty and I didn’t mind the texture at all. Very surprising. I sipped on sparkling water while waiting for my entree.

I chose the Pacific Rim Mahi Mahi–the fish was steamed with ginger, along with vegetables in a hoisin sauce. I had never tried mahi mahi and it was wonderful! The texture was to die for!

Everyone was so satisfied with dinner we didn’t even bother to order dessert, but J and I did end up stopping at Tims for a steeped tea with milk. Mmmm….warm and tasty! (Not pictured)

Mine is probably having brunch with my hubby, walking around some quaint little area with a great latte in hand, an afternoon nap and sushi for dinner while cuddling on the couch watching a romantic comedy. Yup, that about sums it up! πŸ™‚

Ola!

Hope everyone had a great day! I started off my day with a GM:

Just the usual stuff: kale, banana, 1% milk, vanilla yogurt and flaxseeds.

Lunch was a salad with some leftover veggies:

  • mixed greens
  • arugula
  • warmed braised fennel
  • warmed steamed rapini
  • red bell pepper
  • spanish onion
  • 1/2 diced chicken breast
  • balsamic vinegar, 1/2 tsp olive oil, salt and pepper

This was sooo good! Every bite was amazing. I do wish I had chopped up some mushrooms into it though. That would have made it perfect.

I wasn’t very hungry this evening so I just ended up having a serving of Knorr Yellow Soup with 1/2 a high protein, high fibre pita:

  • 1 large coffee with milk (only had 1/2 of it, wasn’t very good)
  • 1 medium coffee with milk (only had 1/2 of it)
  • a Starbucks tall nonfat unsweetened earl grey latte (tasty!)

So today I went to a local mall and did a little shopping! If there is one thing to know about me, it is that I love buying beauty products–the whole experience–trying, smelling, touching, etc. I just love trying different scents and textures–whether it be a perfume, a body lotion or a shower gel. Apart from my make up and skin care, I rarely buy a product twice and always try to switch up my lotions and potions. Today I bought something old and something new:

Caudalie face cleanser

This is my go to face cleanser. I have a lot of issues with dryness, sensitive skin and rosacea and this manages to clean my face without irritation. I really enjoy a lot of their products and up until recently, used their Premiere Vendanges as my face moisturizer.

This was new:

Shower Gel

This just has a warm, scrumptious scent that makes me happy. I took my time smelling all the lovely holiday Philosophy shower gels but this one still appealed to me most. My only concern however, is that my husband may try to take a bite out of me! LOL

I was also in need of some long sleeve T’s so I bought some from Old Navy. 2 for $18 CAN is a steal!

I had an old black long sleeve T but it was way worn out from washing. While many years ago I might have refused to buy myself clothes in a “non ideal” size and keep wearing the same old stuff as a sort of “punishment”, I eventually tired of the “when I’m thin” mentality and realized that it’s now that counts. I deserve to be treated well–by others and myself. So if I need or want something, I buy it.Β  I also don’t need to be thin to be happy or love myself. I am happy and love myself regardless of what size I am! πŸ™‚

Oversleeping + Bloating = Icky

Hi all!

So I ended up oversleeping again, which is not anything new. I tend to oversleep during my days off as I generally lose one night’s sleep every time I work a stretch of shifts. However, an hour extra here and there is tolerable. An extra 4 hours in one night? Not so much.

I woke up feeling awful and bloated. Perhaps it was the pizza? I generally have to be careful with any starchy food I eat–I’m usually only able to tolerate starches in smaller quantities or I become bloated and very drowsy. It happened again yesterday–I fell asleep on the couch within an hour of eating dinner. I’m not sure why it happens, though it generally only happens with wheat based foods. I’m usually okay with fruits, refined sugar, dairy and starchy vegetables.

Am I the only one this happens to? Have you ever become sleepy and/or bloated after a starch heavy meal?

Anyhow, I started off the day with a workout at the gym. I did 33 minutes on the elliptical, drank almost 1 litre of water and certainly didn’t feel any better once I was done.

But I definitely felt better after this:

Coffee

I had a large coffee with 2 milk–that is equivalent to almost 1/3 C of 2% milk. Shortly after, I had a clementine:

And got started on lunch. My plan was to throw every single vegetable I could into my salad. I used:

  • mixed greens + baby arugula
  • campari tomatoes
  • 1/2 avocado
  • grated carrot
  • chopped cremini mushrooms
  • red onion
  • red bell pepper
  • 2 hard boiled eggs, chopped

I enjoyed this with about 4 melba toasts and of course tossed it in balsamic vinegar and olive oil. It was wonderfully filling πŸ™‚

I’m still pretty full and haven’t yet decided what’s for dinner. Thinking about braising some fennel….
